VILEVI and Wood
THE WOOD
The morphological characteristics of solid wood, often considered wood defects, are the qualities that give it the deserved title of “unique and privileged material”; these are small cracks or crevices, knots and color variations that guarantee the authenticity of this raw material.
Solid wood is obtained from the center or “heart” of the tree, that is, from the most resistant and massive part of the trunk; it creates durable, resistant and excellent quality furniture, without the use of any chemical treatment that spoils its naturalness.
The characteristics of solid wood are the most appreciated since the most remote times; this wood is obtained through craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation; over time, this lively and natural wood undergoes changes: darker color, curves, twists, settling of the structure and the appearance of cracks, natural and typical phenomena that are highly sought after for the manufacture of “poor art” furniture, very precious and well-made.
Due to the loss of the water present in the tree, solid wood is subject to dimensional shrinkage, one of the few defects of this material, for which it undergoes small changes in shape.
SOLID WOOD or Medium density fiberboard (MDF)
Today, wood is rarely used as SOLID (solid wood obtained directly from the trunk), to facilitate its industrial processing, more and more recourse is made to the so-called wood derivatives.
However, choosing to build your own solid wood objects is an original thing.
The term SOLID indicates parts in solid wood, for example boards worked with only external finishing operations.
Nature provides us with wood with unique and particular characteristics: its appearance is warm and pleasant to the touch, it is easy to work with and allows you to have light and very resistant objects.
ADVANTAGES: Warm appearance due to the nuanced color and the grain, lightness and compactness, diversification in processing
DISADVANTAGES: Deformation defects due to seasoning, swellings.
